SMS Verification
SMS verification strengthens security by providing a secondary layer of authentication for user verification. SMS verification delivers a unique, time-sensitive verification code to the user's mobile device via text message. This code is sent to the user's registered phone number and can be entered to verify the user's identity when accessing applications or services.
Steps to configure SMS verification
- Navigate to the Application tab and go to Multi-factor Authentication > Authenticators Setup.
- Select SMS Verification.
- Click Enable SMS Verification in the pop-up that appears.
- Click the
icon to modify the authenticator or click the
icon to disable it.
- In the pop-up that appears, click the Select the verification code length drop-down menu to specify the number of characters in the verification code.
- Click Save to finish setting up the SMS verification authenticator.
- Click the Remove Configuration button to reset the configuration and delete all user enrollment data associated with this SMS verification. This action will restore the settings to their default state.
- For detailed configuration of advanced SMS settings, like adding secondary numbers, forcing registration for MFA, and controlling country codes, visit the Advanced Settings page.
Note: User accounts created within Universal Directory with mobile numbers—as well as users from other directories whose mobile numbers are synced with Universal Directory—won't need to undergo enrollment again for SMS verification. The user accounts will automatically have their primary mobile numbers enrolled for SMS verification, eliminating the need for re-enrollment.
To ensure SMS verification works correctly, mobile numbers must be in a valid format, including the dialing code. While spaces, hyphens, or parentheses are optional, if used, they should follow the correct regional formatting. Here are some examples of correctly formatted numbers: +1 888 791 1189, +1 833-420-0996, +44 (20) 3564 7890, +91 8220869471. If you have any issues with the mobile number format during SMS verification, please reach out to Identity360 support for help.
Mobile numbers that are self-enrolled by users are considered secondary. These self-enrolled numbers can still be used for verification, but they are not the primary contact details for the account.
To check for primary and secondary numbers, follow these steps:
- Navigate to the Reports tab > MFA Reports.
- In the Enrolled Users section, click on the filter icon (
).
- Choose Enrolled Mobile Number from the drop-down menu.
- Enter your search criteria and click Apply.
- To see the primary and secondary mobile numbers, click View under the Enrolled Authenticators column for the user you want to check.
- Primary numbers can also be found by navigating to the Universal Directory tab > All Users. Use the search icon (
) and enter the number in the Mobile column filter.
