Data Breach

Contact management app victim of a data breach

On May 18, 2020, Covve, an address book app based in Cyprus, revealed that an unauthorized attacker had gained access to its network. The attack was brought to Covve's notice on May 15, 2020, and 23 million users’ email addresses and other personal details are estimated to have been compromised in the breach. Fortunately, no passwords were stolen.

The aftermath

As soon as the attack was detected, Covve hired forensics experts to launch an investigation to learn the extent of the breach. The breach was identified in the now-retired Covve web app, and the company has taken steps to decommission the app to isolate the threat. With the help of the experts, Covve has also begun to implement additional processes to prevent attacks in the future. Affected users have been notified about the security incident. Troy Hunt, the founder of the Have I Been Pwned website, claimed to have discovered the breach in February.
