On July 5, 2019, the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) confirmed that a data breach that affected its payroll servers in June did not impact employee data as it originally feared. In initial reports, it was speculated that the salary and bank account details of important FAI officials may have been compromised.

What happened

In June 2019, FAI detected malware in its payroll server, which led them to believe that team's top officials financial data might have been exposed. An internal memo was sent to employees urging them to review their bank statements for any suspicious activity. The affected server contained names, salary information, contact details, bank account details, and Personal Public Service numbers of employees.

Investigations following the incident, however, proved that no data was extracted from the servers. Since ticket sales are handled by a third-party vendor, payment details of fans was not affected in the breach either. Even though no data was accessed, the Office of the Data Protection Commission and law enforcement agencies have been notified regarding the breach.
