Marriott discloses a data breach affecting 5.2 million guests

Yet again, international hotel chain Marriott has become a victim of a data breach, this time affecting the personal details of 5.2 million customers. Names, addresses, phone numbers, loyalty member data, birth dates, and other travel information such as linked airline loyalty numbers and room preferences were compromised in the breach.

The breach was detected in February 2020 when Marriott discovered that the login credentials of two employees were compromised and used to access the details of the guests. The impacted accounts have been disabled, and the affected guests have been notified and given identity theft monitoring services for a year free of cost. In November 2018, Marriott confirmed that a breach in the guest reservation database of Starwood Hotels, a subsidiary of Marriott, exposed data belonging to up to 500 million customers.
