On April 22, 2020, the US-based Small Business Administration (SBA) notified that a data breach might have affected the personal information of almost 8,000 small businesses. Personal information may have included names, Social Security numbers, addresses, birth dates, email addresses, phone numbers, citizenship status, and insurance information. The letter, dated April 13, said there were no signs that the information had been misused.
The attack was detected on March 25, and the affected businesses were immediately notified. These businesses had applied to the agency’s Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) program in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. The agency identified the issue on its website and fixed it. In the letters sent to the businesses, it was mentioned that there were no signs that the information had been misused. Impacted businesses have been offered a year of free credit monitoring.
