Data Breach

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs discloses cyberattack

On September 14, 2020, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Office of Management released a security breach notice on its website. According to the statement, the attack compromised the personal information of around 46,000 veterans.

An online application from the VA's Financial Services Center was wrongfully accessed using social engineering techniques to exploit authentication protocols. Officials found payments that were intended for veteran treatment at multiple community health centers had been diverted; following the discovery, the application was taken offline. The investigation revealed that the Social Security numbers of some veterans and the next-of-kin of the deceased were also exposed in the incident. The VA has notified affected veterans and the next-of-kin of the deceased regarding the breach with specific instructions, and is also offering free credit monitoring to those whose Social Security numbers were compromised.
