On February 5, 2020, New York-based television cable provider Altice USA Inc. revealed that it was a victim of an email phishing scam. Social Security numbers, birth dates, and other personal information of 12,000 current employees, former employees, and some customers were compromised in the breach.
The incident occurred in November 2019 when a threat actor sent phishing emails to gain access to the email account credentials of employees. The attackers used the stolen credentials to access and download mailboxes of compromised email accounts. The investigations in January 2020 revealed that the compromised emails contained reports of users' personal details. Fortunately, no financial information was involved in the attack. Colleen Schmidt, Altice’s executive vice president of HR, said the company is offering free identity and credit monitoring for one year from Experian to all affected users.
