Milwaukee-based smart parking meter solution, CivicSmart, is believed to be a victim of Sodinokibi ransomware. The attackers gained entry into CivicSmart's network, and subsequently extracted employee and personnel data. The compromised data included employee records, bank statements, customers' credit card numbers, and contracts with cities and parking garage vendors.
The incident happened in March, but security researchers only recently identified the incident. The attack was discovered when the hackers posted stolen files on a website in an attempt to extract ransom payments, and later claimed on the website that the company had paid the ransom in exchange for decryption keys. Surprisingly, the company did not notify the customers about the breach, even though it affected their personal data. It's unclear if law authorities have been contacted.
