On December 7, 2019, security expert Brian Krebs revealed in a blog post that more than 100 dental offices have been affected as a result of a ransomware attack on a Colorado-based IT company, Complete Technology Solutions (CTS).
CTS is the third-party IT services provider for more than 100 dentistry businesses, handling those dentist offices’ network security, data backups, voice-over-IP phone services, and more. The attack occurred on October 25, affecting the services offered by the dentistry clinics. Spokespersons from affected practices, as well as cybersecurity firms hired to salvage their networks, reported that CTS declined to pay a $700,000 ransomware demand. However, individual dental clinics have taken steps to pay the ransom in small amounts in exchange for decryption keys for their own data.
The firm was affected by a variant of ransomware called Sodinokibi, also known as rEvil or Sodin. It operates via a ransomware-as-a-service model, and is available on dark web forums.
