On February 26, 2019, Delaware Guidance Services for Children and Youth, Inc. (DGS) sent letters to parents and guardians of affected patients. The letter explains that on December 25, 2018, DGS was the victim of a ransomware attack that locked up its servers. The compromised servers contained personal information, including names, addresses, birth dates, social security numbers, and medical information of its patients.
To secure the release of the records, DGS was required to pay a ransom in exchange for a decryption key. In order to identify whether any of the records were improperly accessed, DGS hired a third-party IT security firm to conduct a forensic analysis of the incident. DGS did not disclose whether it paid the ransom or include details on if it was able to recover any data. DGS is offering one year of free credit monitoring and reporting services to the affected individuals. Besides that, they've notified the authorities about the attack.
