Elexon, a crucial element in the UK’s electricity network, has been affected by ransomware. The company handles distributing power supply to the power grid for the UK. The attack has affected the internal IT network and employee laptops.
The incident occurred on May 11, 2020. “We are advising you today that ELEXON’s internal IT systems have been impacted by a cyberattack. BSC Central Systems and EMR are currently unaffected and working as normal,” the firm stated in a bulletin. Experts have confirmed that attackers used REvil/Sodinokibi ransomware to infiltrate the systems, and have demanded a ransom in exchange for decryption keys. With the ransom demand denied and data recovered from backups, attackers resorted to leaking 1,280 files allegedly stolen from the company on their site. The stolen data contained the passports of Elexon staff members and an insurance application form.
