In March 2020, Manheim Auctions, a car auction company in Australia, revealed that its database was affected by a ransomware attack. The hackers are demanding $30 million in ransom for the decryption keys.
The incident reportedly took place on February 14th, 2020, when the malware denied employees’ access to its computer systems. However, no personal data of its users has been compromised as part of the attack. The cybersecurity experts from Manheim Auctions’ parent company in America, Cox Automotive, are now working to restore the services and are currently developing a new website.
Western Australian’s Consumer Protection agency is backing Manheim’s decision to not pay ransom to the attackers. The Facebook page of Manheim says that the website access has been restricted; they have also notified users that a few upcoming auctions will be canceled until further notice.
