FAQ's

  • After adding devices. Will there be any impact if I remove the discovery profile?No, there won't be any impact. Once the devices are added in OpManager, it will not be removed even if you remove the discovery profile.
  • Is there a way to manage a device through DNS name instead of IP since we have dynamically changing environment? Yes. To enable this option, go to settings -> Monitoring -> Monitor settings and set Poll Using option to DNS.
  • Can we add a device using SNMP Trap?Yes. To enable this option, go to Settings -> Discovery -> Discovery settings and Enable the Discover Devices via Trap option.
  • Does OpManager captures history on when the devices were added, deleted etc?Yes. You can view this information in the Audit history for individual devices. Navigate to the Device snapshot page, click on the green configure option on the top right corner and select Audit history.
  • Is IPV6 discovery supported?Yes, in addition to IPv4, OpManager also supports IPv6.
  • How does Layer 2 Discovery works?OpManager’s Layer 2 Discovery automatically identified all the devices connected to your network and draws a detailed network map with them. To know how Layer 2 Discovery works in detail, go to this link:

  • What are the system requirements for installation?The minimum system requirements for installing opmanager can be found in this link:

  • If I want to add the devices manually, can the auto discovery option be disabled?Yes, you can disable the auto discovery option in Network discovery by choosing the ‘schedule once’ option.
  • What is meant by SNMP and SNMP Traps?SNMP is the protocol which is used to monitor the devices in OpManager. SNMP traps are alerts from remote devices.
  • What is the latest version of XenServer and VMware supported by OpManager?OpManager supports Vcenter up to version 6.5 and XenServer up to version 7. 
  • How can we get traffic from the network interfaces of a WatchGuard firewall?By using SNMP, you can discover the interfaces of a WatchGuard firewall to monitor the traffic. 
  • What are SNMP traps?SNMP trap is a message that would interpret the trap OID into a meaningful alarm. In OpManager, we have some pre-defined SNMP trap processors for any authentication failures, link UP/DOWN etc. Trap by default would occupy the port 162.
  • For vCenter/Hyper-V and XenServer, is it only the root credentials that can be entered into the discovery process or can other credentials can be used ?Other credentials can also be used if MOB connection is reachable.
  • How can you add devices to specific business maps? You can configure the Rule Engine in OpManager to add the specific devices to Business View.
  • Is there any particular port to be opened for Hyper-V servers?Yes, Hyper-V servers use the administrative credentials of WMI during discovery. So it is mandatory to open the TCP port 135, 445 and few dynamic ports as well.
  • How can we discover devices if we don’t have a CSV file?If you have list of IP Address in any other file format or if you know the range of IPs you can discover them using ‘IPRange’ option in discovery.
  • Can we use L2 Discovery to discover L2 Switches and Firewalls?You can use Layer2 discovery to discover L2 switches. 
  • Why can't I add performance monitors via Rule Engine?Performance monitors can be added only via device templates. It is the current design. We have plans to enhance it as "monitoring profile" in future so it can be applied via Rule Engine.
  • Make it sense to use layer2 discover without CDP?We can do it by LLDP based discovery but for Cisco CDP is recommended.
  • What is the role of this seed router?OpManager will query the seed device(mostly core switch with SNMP) and get all the neighbor devices to plot the layer 2 map.
  • Does REST API work with FreshService?REST API is for OpManager. Since the APIs are open, any third party tool can integrate with it, provided that third party tool has an option to call OpManager APIs.

  • If you have a notification profile associated with say the category Servers, and a new server is added after the profile was associated. Will the new server automatically be added to the notification profile that was previously associated with the category Servers, or will it need to be added manually?We can do it by Rule Engine.   • What will happen if we have virtual devices in a cluster. How we can be sure that we will monitor the devices even in the case that it moves to different physical computers of the cluster?If the IP/DNS of the VM is the same while moving , OpManager will continue to monitor it.
  • Imagine i want to skip all the windows pc when i discover network devices, my list shows unknown categoryUse discovery filter to exclude all windows devices by choosing ignore filter -> device type contains as 'Windows' and choose one more ignore filter for Unknown.
  • How I can discover and monitor only critical interface of switch like uplink or ten gigabit interface?We have an option to filter based on interface type like 'Ethernet' now and we will provide more filter like 10G interfaces soon.
  • How to rediscover IP address in network devices?Choose existing devices option in Network discovery and choose the devices based on category.
  • Can I modify DomainController category?Yes, You can change the category in device snapshot page.
  • How shall i discover cisco l2 switch?Yes, if any device that responds to SNMP we can add this in OpManager by giving proper SNMP credentials. If there is no exact device template for this then please refer this link to create custom device template for the same.

  • What happens if i accidentally delete VMwareVirtualMachine template or some monitor of it, then how do i re-add the monitor or the entire template?You can import this template using import option. Please click export this option under device temlate it's present before delete button in demo.opmanager.com.

  • Can a device be added, just for the ability to ping test, without SNMP or WMI. I have vendor devices on my network, that I do not have SNMP or WMI on. I just need to to Ping these devices?Yes. It is possible. Please discover the device & OpManager will do an ICMP ping periodically and update the device status.
  • How to configure thresholds in OpManager? Please check the following video tutorial for help. You can also refer this link to know about configuring thresholds.
  • Do you recommend discovery on VCenter over the ESXI Host? Yes, we recommend discovering Vcenter server over ESXi.
  • Is there a collector or probe available for collecting logs/traps from a remote location? Yes, we have enterprise edition for distributed environments.
  • If trap is net-snmp coldstart which does not have a sysoid of a device will we still discover the manufacturer sysoid and assign type and other device info? If there is no Sysoid for the device then OpManager will add this device as Unknown. You can change the device type/category manually in the device snapshot page.
  • Does OpManager support flow information processing? OpManager Plus supports Netflow, sflow, jflow processing. We have a NetFlow analyzer module which supports flow based monitoring.
  • Do you recommend using Domain Administrator credentials or the Local Administrator credentials on a Windows Server/Workstation? Monitoring Windows servers in OpManager requires local administrator credentials.
  • Is it possible to group devices by IP range or some other networking hook? You can group the IP Range device in Business views via Rule Engine. To know more about business view please refer this link.
  • Is it possible to create a rule where I could group existing servers into a business view? There is an option to re-run the rule engine. Add the criteria and move the devices to the business view.
  • During auto-discovery is there any plan to be able to filter interfaces based on a template or some other filter? Yes, you can filter the interface type in the discovery profile.
  • When you are running a discovery, should the devices be online? Should this be done during business hours? Will it affect the network? You can add the offline devices via add device option and it will be added as a non-reachable device. Once the device is back online, OpManager will rediscover the device.
  • During an auto-discovery triggered by a trap, is it possible that a net-snmp trap triggering the discovery be responsible for the device's unknown state? If there are no sysoids that match with OpManager's default device templates, OpManager will detect the device as Unknown. If you have more doubts, please send the devicetype and sysoids to OpManager support and we will add this in our future releases.
  • Could an unknown device be rediscovered later assuming that the credentials were not the cause for the unknown state? You can achieve this by schedule discovery option and choose the device in "Existing devices" filter option.
  • How to add Cyberoam Firewall in OpManager? You can add the firewall device through add device option, and add the performance monitors for Cyberoam Firewal. If there are no default performance monitors, please add them via custom monitors. Refer this link to know more about creating custom templates and custom monitors.
  • Is there any API for Public Cloud monitoring? You can use OpManager's APM plugin for cloud monitoring. Please refer this page to know more about APM Plugin.
  • Is reverse DNS is required for Discovery? Not mandatory, but if DNS is present OpManager will automatically get the DNS name and there is an option to poll the devices using the name instead of changing IPs.
  • We have a proxy environment, for monitoring URLs do we have to configure proxy settings in OpManager? If the URL needs proxy then you have to add your network proxy credentials in OpManager's proxy settings
  • Do you have any templates for Avaya Communication Manager/Comm. Manager/Call Management Server/Avaya Contact recorder/Messaging to monitor its trunks/services? We have default 13 Avaya templates, if you have OIDs for performance monitors then you can add this by creating custom performance monitors.
  • How to disable automatic discovery, so that I can only add selected devices manually? You can do so by following either one of the below steps
    Specify the IP range or CSV file to add those devices
    Under Settings-->Discovery-->"Add devices" or "Schedule once" option once when the discovery profile is completed.
  • How does discovery work for firewalls? For discovery, make sure that the devices are reachable from the OpManager server and that the appropriate protocol is enabled for discovery process. Device addition is done with the ICMP ping response.
  • How can I target specific tables while adding devices from Servicenow. Will Opmanager consume Servicenow API ? OpManager will not consume Servicenow license. Servicenow can just use addDevice API call to initiate device discovery in OpManager when an IT asset is added in Servicenow.
  • How does OpManager identifies a category as DESKTOP.. Do we need provide the IP as DESKTOP in the CSV file? Using sysoids and WMI credentials, OpManager identifies the device category as Desktop.
  • Can you hide devices that are no longer in service without deleting them? There is an option to unmanage the device. It wont consume the license too.
  • Are there audit reports per device (ie history of when they were added, modified, etc) There is an option for Audit history for individual devices. Navigate to Device snapshot page-->Green configure option on the top RHS-->audit history. This is only available in version 12.3 or above.
  • If I change the device name will it be rechanged once the device is rediscovered? Rediscovery will not change the Displayname.
  • How do I get the CSV sample file ?When you select CSV discovery, you will see sample CSV file link there.
  • Make it sense to use layer2 discover without CDP?We can do it by LLDP based discovery but for Cisco CDP is recommended.
  • Is it possible to set the login screen to NOT remember my password ?I think it is the browser settings. You can go to "saved passwords" and remove that password.
  • Is there a way to integrate this with Fresh Service? That is what we use for our helpdesk?It is not available by default but if freshService has APIs, we can try integrating it.
  • How do we add Cisco and Avaya MIBS? Most of the CISCO mibs and the OIDs used for monitoring are already inside Opmanager. if you want to add more, you can copy the mibs under /opmanager/mibs. Adding mibs is just a part of adding monitors. You need to add additional custom SNMP monitors . We will cover that in part 2.
  • When discovering interfaces is there a limit on the license? No. OpManager license is based on device count.
  • What is the time frame it takes to discover new devices when the interface port comes up? Trying to detect Rogue devices.
    There is an option to schedule the rediscovery of the subnet. You have an option to discover them.
  • Is there a way add the necessary notifications during discovery? There is an option to add notifications during discovery using discovery rule engine.
  • If I have already made a discovery of 3 servers that correspond to a vmware, and then I do the discovery of vmware, are the monitors duplicated? Would it be advisable to make the discovery only of the vmware so that it could discover all its hosts or go host by host?In recent OpManager release, We have provide you to an option to choose the desired VMs to be added in VmWare discovery wizard.
  • If device is discovered 2 times, once as a Server | Windows 2008 R2 | WMI and once as Server | Windows 2008 R2 | WMI | Hyper-V-VM what do you recommend? We recommed to use the correct type of Device type, If it is Hyper-V-VM then let it be monitor this as Hyper-V.
  • Is it possible to discover Windows devices interfaces with WMI credentials? We use SNMP for Network interface discovery for Servers and is not possible using WMI.
  • How can I turn off the VMware VCenter auto discovery. We have a lab environment which has over 500 VM we do not want to monitor. You can edit VMWare credential and uncheck VM Auto Discovery.
  • You can add servers and switches to ServiceDesk Plus, how does OpManager differ? ServiceDesk will get the inventory like installed software and other details where OpManager has capability of monitoring the performance of Server, Windows Services and Processes running in that Server. Similarly performance of Switches and its ports utilization.
  • Is there any difference in OpManager if we use it in linux? Only difference between Windows and Linux installation is WMI cannot be used in Linux installation of OpManager.
  • After adding a device template, will the new devices from list be already updated in real-time? No. Create a schedule discovery profile to periodically scan and update your device details.
  • Is the layer 2 map of automatically discovered devices editable? Layer 2 map is not editable.
  • Is there something we have to configure to obtain stats for this port? Create schedule discovery profile with interface discovery enabled. It will update speed of the interface.
  • Is OpManager compatible with MSSQL Express? Yes.
  • Can you enter a range to ping in OpManager? Currently we don't support that feature in the OpManager discovery module. But we do have an IP Address and switch port management add-on ( OpUtils ) in which you can ping a range of devices. You install the Oputils add-on and go to Settings -> tools -> Network Monitoring -> Network Scanner & provide the IP range to ping the devices in the IP range.
  • Does OpManager support SNMPv3 for monitoring windows based devices? Windows devices does not support SNMP v3. So OpManager cannot monitor Windows devices by SNMP V3.
  • My discovery consists of host names, fqdn names, upper case, lower case and mixed case names. Is there a way to standardize the device display name when discovered? You can enable 'Use DNS as Display Name' option under Settings->Discovery->Discovery Settings to maintain standard format in display name.
  • We currently have OpManager Essential [Professional Edition] Build 12.3.158 installed on Win 2008R2 server. How difficult is to migrate the db and setting to a Win2016 server? You can take the backup from the server Win 2008R2 and Install the fresh 12.3.158 and restore the backup.   • Can OpManager trap HP or other switches? or is it just limited to cisco? OpManager can receive traps for all devices irrespective of the vendors. You can refer https://www.manageengine.com/network-monitoring/help/processing-traps.html for more information.
  • Is there any drawback to having a large number of devices ping every minute as the lowest setting vs the standard 10,15 minute ping that some templates suggest? You can go to settings -> Configuration -> Monitoring Interval to view the recommended ping interval....If you are using the most recent version of OpManager, you can find this under settings -> Configuration -> Quick Configuration Wizard.
  • is it possible to remote access a device after the discovery? Yes...you can go to the device snapshot page to get remote access to the device.
  • is there a way to create a detailed uptime report for the servers? You can generate 'Device Availability Report' from Report->Availability and Response-> Device Availability to get the uptime details of the devices.
  • Does this include the time in which the object was in suppress alarm mode? No. This report only contains Device Availability Data. You can get the Alarm suppression details from Reports->System->Audit Report, Then choose Alarm suppression filter. In this you will get the details of Alarm suppression start and end time.
  • Is any system service to get acquire with SNMP trap? No, we cannot add service monitors using traps.
  • What is the main difference between NetFlowAnalayzer and OpManager? NFA is for in-detail flow analysis and OpManager is for network monitoring.
  • Does OpManager also use an agent for scanning or only network scanning via network protocols? OpManager does not use any agents for monitoring. OpManager can add devices using network protocols
  • Do we need any agent require for SNMP trap ? No, we do not require any agents for SNMP trap. You have configure the end device to forward the trap to OpManager server and we will generate the alerts based on the trap processor.
  • If I rediscovered the devices will it affect the business view, since this was an issue in the old OpManager version? No, Rediscovering the device will not effect the business view.
  • Is there a built-in mechanism for cleaning up DB of OPM? No, but we have our database maintenance configuration which will store the data for specific time periods.
  • Quick Question .. Adding Devices on workgroup , or nested vm or SDN networks example 2 vlan internal network for development. Will it detect also and monitor ? Yes, it can detect them.
  • With unknown credentials of each stand alone , how will it detect? At present we can test the credential and show if its failing or not. With no credentials we can show the availability for the devices alone.

  • Is there a best practices for PostGre maintenance? We have a set of tuning available for the database.
  • How can we delete bulk discover interfaces during discovery? You can select the interfaces in inventory and delete.
  • When I set a criteria to add a device to a group, devices are not added automatically. Is this possible? Please create a Group with Criteria option. So later when discovery runs it will get automatically added to that Group.
  • Should SNMP string match at both end ? Yes. Community String must be same as it is in the device end.
  • After adding the devices the interfaces via SNMP the interface are not discovering. what can be done on that time? Please enable interface discovery under Discovery-> Discovery Settings.
  • How about Hyper-V Auto Discover ? Hyper V devices will get auto discovered every two hours.
  • Is that possible to block selected websites using OpManager? OpManager is a monitoring solution which helps you know the status of the URLs and may not be mange URLs.
  • Can the interfaces be unmanaged(bulk) once the devices are added ? You can group interfaces and unmange them.. You can also have the option to unmanage them by clicking on Inventory-->interfaces-->Select interfaces and click options-->Unmanage.
  • Why am I receiving a lot of this alarms: The AuthenticationFailure v2 trap is received? If more number of traps received from End device, OpManager will parse it and raise an alert.
  • How do we manage disk I/O using OpManager, basically I need to get read and writes speed from production database servers? That is absolutely possible by adding respective monitors from performance monitors.
  • Why would I like to know what can I expect by monitoring computers? By monitoring the computers you have bunch of metrics which can be monitored right from availability, CPU utilization, disk space usage and more on.
  • How to remove interfaces from being monitored? Go to Settings -> Discovery -> Discovery Settings -> Interface discovery -> Click Disable radio button -> Click Save. Interfaces will not get discovered. To unmanage already discovered interfaces, we can unmanage them from Interface's snapshot as well as from inventory.
  • How does OpManager handle SNMP community strings with spaces? We will encrypt the community string as a whole.
