GPO management in Active Directory

IT administrators are often entrusted with tasks for creating and managing security policies in Active Directory (AD) to ensure seamless access to network resources. Configuring these policies and settings for individual users and computers can be quite time-consuming and complex, especially within a larger organization. Group Policy Objects (GPOs) in AD streamline this process by allowing administrators to apply policies to domains, organizational units (OUs), or entire sites. They also provide flexibility, enabling policies to be consistently applied to individual objects or groups of objects within a domain, OU, or site all at once.

Microsoft's Active Directory Users and Computers (ADUC) and the Group Policy Management Console (GPMC) are the most commonly used tools for creating objects and applying group policies in AD. However, administrators may find these native tools cumbersome, as they require frequent switching between multiple consoles and technical expertise. Additionally, the GPMC can only apply group policies to one domain, OU, or site at a time, making the management of multiple GPOs challenging.

ADManager Plus is an IGA solution with AD management and reporting capabilities that offers a more efficient and intuitive way to create and manage GPOs. As an AD GPO management tool, it allows administrators to create GPOs and instantly link them to multiple OUs, domains, or sites, all from a single place.

GPO management using ADManager Plus

Using ADManager Plus' intuitive and user-friendly interface, administrators can:

Create GPOs

With the GPMC, creating GPOs and linking them to AD objects isn't a one-step process. Administrators need to create the GPO first, then link it to the corresponding objects, which is time-consuming. With ADManager Plus, on the other hand, administrators can create GPOs and instantly link them to multiple OUs, domains, or sites in a single operation.

Manage GPOs

Managing GPOs often involves enabling or disabling GPOs, managing their links, editing their configurations and scopes, and more. The GPMC does not allow administrators to link GPOs to multiple objects at the same time and requires administrators to switch between multiple consoles, which can be quite labor-intensive.

ADManager Plus' GPO management feature helps administrators edit the Administrative Template Policy Settings for both user and computer configuration of GPOs, modify the GPO scope, and delete or disable GPOs in a few clicks. Unlike the GPMC, ADManager Plus enables administrators to manage GPO security and Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) filtering. Administrators can also configure GPO permissions for specific users, computers, and groups; block inheritance; and more. With ADManager Plus' intuitive interface, administrators can:

  • Edit GPOs
  • Enable or disable GPOs
  • Delete GPOs
  • Rename GPOs
  • Manage the GPO scope
  • Configure GPO permissions

Administrators generally create group policies to apply a particular set of settings on desired objects. For example, they might create a policy that restricts users and computers in particular domains, sites, or OUs from accessing certain applications. With ADManager Plus, administrators can easily link a GPO to particular domains, sites, or OUs.

Configuring a GPO in a larger organization where there are hundreds of GPOs and OUs is a daunting task. However, ADManager Plus makes it easy by allowing administrators to configure GPOs for multiple objects in just one click.

Migrate GPOs

Migrating GPOs is a critical task when moving to a new domain, restructuring an existing one, or transitioning to a new server. Ensuring that all policies are accurately transferred while minimizing downtime and maintaining security is essential. ADManager Plus allows administrators to migrate GPOs from one domain to another with all their configurations intact.

Organizations often change their policies to keep up with the evolving threat landscape and technological advancements. When these changes occur, an administrator typically needs to update the GPOs accordingly. For example, a GPO that manages firewall settings might originally apply to an entire OU, but a policy change could require it to be applied only to certain child OUs within that OU. To streamline these adjustments, ADManager Plus provides several useful features to:

  • Enable, disable, or remove GPO links.
  • Enforce or remove enforcement options for GPO links.
  • Block or unblock inheritance of GPO links.

With its extensive range of features and user-friendly interface, ADManager Plus simplifies GPO management for IT administrators. It also offers pre-built GPO reports, such as those on newly created GPOs and GPOs with blocked inheritance, allowing for quick access to GPO-related information. Additionally, admins can securely delegate Group Policy management tasks to help desk technicians.

Copy GPOs

Copying GPOs is an essential task when administrators need to replicate settings across different parts of an organization, such as multiple OUs or even different domains. This process can save time and ensure consistency in policy application across the network. ADManager Plus allows administrators to copy GPOs and their settings seamlessly and handle conflicts hassle-free.
