Air New Zealand falls victim to a data breach affecting over 100,000 Airpoints members.

On August 9, 2019, Air New Zeland's Airpoints program participants were notified that their personal data was affected in a data breach due to two employees falling victim to an email phishing attack.

What is the extent of the breach?

In this attack, 112,000 Airpoints program members were affected. While membership profiles weren't accessed directly, the compromised email accounts contained several documents, which may have given attackers access to the personal data of customers, including name, Airpoints numbers, dates of birth, passport details, and email addresses. Fortunately, credit card and Airpoints account passwords were not affected in the breach.

As per security guidelines, Air New Zealand notified the Privacy Commissioner regarding the incident on July 31. They've also taken steps to strengthen security measures and provided recommendations to identify and avoid malicious emails.
