Ransomware

Illinois city’s public health district website affected by ransomware

In March 2020, the public health district’s website for the City of Champaign, Illinois discovered that it was hacked in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. The website was made inaccessible by a ransomware attack, called the Netwalker, and the residents were instructed to refer to the district’s Facebook page for updates on the pandemic.

The aftermath

The attack was uncovered and announced on March 11, 2020, when the authorities were unable to access the files. Fortunately, the health department employees’ email accounts, environmental health records, and patient electronic medical records were moved to cloud storage six months before the breach and were unaffected. The district notified the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security and is working with a cybersecurity firm to investigate the attack and restore services. The district has also set up a dedicated email address and hotline number for questions about coronavirus.
