Limitations and best practices when configuring immutable backups

Immutable backups ensure backups remain unaltered and are protected against threats like accidental deletion, tampering, and ransomware. While it provides robust data protection, there are certain limitations that you should be aware of when implementing this feature in RecoveryManager Plus.

  • Retention period restrictions
When immutability is enabled in supported cloud repositories, any changes made to the retention settings in the respective repository portals will only affect backups created after the retention settings have been modified. The updated retention settings will not apply to backups taken before the changes were made.
  • Deletion of backup schedules
Immutable data backups ensure data cannot be altered or removed. Once a backup schedule is associated with an immutable storage repository, it cannot be deleted until the immutability period expires. This lack of flexibility can hinder adjustments to back up settings as organizational needs evolve.
  • Deletion of repositories
RecoveryManager Plus restricts the deletion of immutable repositories. This limitation can lead to a continuous accumulation of unused repositories over time, impacting storage management and increasing costs.

Best practices for managing immutable backups

Here are some best practices to help organizations efficiently handle immutable backups while addressing potential challenges:

  • Careful planning: Conduct a thorough assessment and define clear retention policies that align with your organization's disaster recovery strategy. Test your disaster recovery strategy to ensure the immutability period set adheres to compliance standards.
  • Access controls: Implement strict access controls in the cloud storage service being configured to ensure only authorized personnel can modify or delete backup settings. Use multi-factor authentication (MFA) for added security.
  • Diverse storage locations: Store immutable backups across multiple storage locations to ensure availability in the event of disasters.

While immutable backups provide unparalleled protection against threats like ransomware and accidental data loss, understanding their limitations in RecoveryManager Plus is essential to balance compliance, storage costs, and operational efficiency.
