Even just a few years ago, IT departments were very different: firefighting issues and tracking assets with spreadsheets, spreadsheets, and more spreadsheets. Between replacing busted floppy disks and reinstalling Windows 2000 on a new employee's computer, there wasn't a lot of time to plan for the future.
And then automation and cloud technologies took the IT industry by storm. Nowadays, sysadmins are much more focused on planning system upgrades and finding new ways to automate routine maintenance for hardware, software, accounts, and more.
But we don't think innovation should stop there. While we can't predict the future of IT, it's clear that emerging technologies could change the way businesses do IT. The Internet of Things, VR, and 3D printing are all exciting technologies that are just starting to take off.
