Data breach

Personal information of 50,000 Illinois students compromised in a data breach.

In August 2019, current and former students and staff members in multiple Illinois school districts were notified of a data breach in Pearson Clinical Assessment's AIMSweb 1.0, a tool used by the schools to track students' academic progress. Compromised information includes first names, last names, date of birth, and email addresses.

The extent of the breach

Around 53,000 students and approximately 3,100 staff members of the Naperville Community Unit School District 203 and the Indian Prairie School District 204 were affected. The data of students who attended these districts from 2001-2016 was impacted, but no test scores or performance data was leaked. Pearson is offering free credit monitoring service from Experian to all the affected students and employees.

Adam Smeets, the chief technology officer for District 204, said in a statement, "Pearson Clinical Assessment has worked with cybersecurity experts to evaluate the incident and assured us that changes have been implemented to prevent this from happening again with their product.”
