In September 2020, University Hospital New Jersey (UHNJ) revealed it was a victim of a data incident caused by a SunCrypt ransomware infection. The compromised data included patient names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, residential addresses, telephone numbers, and digital signatures.
The attackers behind SunCrypt claim to have accessed 240GB of data, out of which 1.79GB containing 48,000 documents has been uploaded to their dark net forum. The stolen information dates as far back as August 2012, and as recent as November 2019. The exposed data also included scanned copies of the patients' driver licenses, as well as information on the hospital’s board of directors. According to its website, the hospital runs on a $626 million budget and has over 3,500 employees, 519 licensed beds, and more than 172,000 annual outpatient visits.
