How to change moderator roles and settings of a Microsoft Teams channel in the Microsoft Teams admin center
In standard practice, channels that are not marked as private are set as unmoderated, allowing unrestricted posting, reacting, and replying for all members. However, team owners possess the ability to define moderation roles for a channel, granting them control over these actions. Additionally, owners have the option to designate team members as moderators, offering a way to maintain order and direction within specific channels. This feature becomes particularly beneficial when establishing specialized channels, such as announcements or those dedicated to particular subjects.
Moderators can:
- Share posts within a channel, as well as react to and respond to posts already present in the channel.
- Manage the inclusion and exclusion of team members in the role of moderator.
- Govern the permissions regarding team members' ability to engage in replies to existing channel messages and determine whether bots and connectors have the capability to submit messages to the channel.
Exclude guests from posting new posts
- Head to the channel you want to manage and click More options.
- From the drop-down menu, select Manage channel.
- Locate the section titled Who can start a new post?
- Choose the option Everyone except guests can start a new post.
Enable moderation
- Head to the channel you want to manage and click More options.
- From the drop-down menu, select Manage channel.
- Locate the Channel moderation setting and enable it by selecting On.
Add or remove channel moderators
- Head to the channel you want to manage and click More options.
- From the drop-down menu, select Manage channel.
- Locate the Channel moderation setting and enable it by selecting On.
- Locate the Who are the moderators? setting and click Manage
- You can now add or remove team team members as moderators for the selected group.
Note: Team owners are automatically designated as channel moderators by default and cannot be removed from this role moderators have the authority to add or remove other moderators as required.
Set team member permissions
Once moderation is enabled, under Team member permissions, you can customize the permissions for team members by selecting the checkboxes beside the activities you wish to authorize. The options available here are:
- Allow or disallow members to reply to channel messages
- Allow or disallow members to pin channel messages
- Allow or disallow bots to submit channel messages
- Allow or disallow connectors to submit channel messages
