How to change static group membership to dynamic in Microsoft Entra ID

Microsoft Entra ID allows you to change the group's membership from static to dynamic and vice-versa. This doesn't change the group name or ID and hence all existing references to the group will remain valid.

Follow the steps below to change the membership type of a group.

1. Sign in to the Microsoft Entra admin center as at least a Groups Administrator .
2. Select Microsoft Entra ID .
3. Navigate to Groups > All groups .
4. Open the group that you want to change.
5. Select Properties .
6. In the Properties page for the group, select your desired Membership type using the drop-down option. For dynamic membership, you can use the rule builder to select options for a simple rule or write a membership rule yourself.

The following steps are an example of changing a group from static to dynamic membership for a group of users.

1. Select a Membership type of Dynamic User, then select Yes on the dialog explaining the changes to the group membership to continue.
2. Select Add dynamic query, and then provide the rule.
3. After creating the rule, select Add query at the bottom of the page.
4. Select Save in the Properties page for the group to save your changes. The Membership type of the group is immediately updated in the group list.
