Message Application Programming Interface (MAPI) is a Microsoft API that enables a mailbox to to send and receive email by using Outlook or other MAPI email clients. You can disable it for mailboxes of your choice if you wish to only use Outlook on the web (formerly known as Outlook Web App), a POP email client, or an IMAP client.
