How to manage custom domain names in your Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure AD) environment

A domain name plays a crucial role in identifying resources across various Microsoft Entra deployments. It forms a component of a user's name or email address, contributes to the address of a group, and occasionally forms part of an application's app ID URI. In Microsoft Entra ID, resources may incorporate a domain name owned by the organization, also known as a tenant, to which the resource belongs. Management of domains within Microsoft Entra ID is handled by Global Administrators and Domain Name Administrators.

Setting the primary domain name for your Microsoft Entra organization

Upon the creation of your organization, the initial domain name, such as sample.example.com, is designated as the primary domain name. This primary domain serves as the default domain for new user creation within your organization. Establishing a primary domain name simplifies the user creation process for administrators accessing the portal. To modify the primary domain name:

  1. Sign in to Microsoft Entra admin center with credentials of a Global Administrator or higher.
  2. Choose Microsoft Entra ID.
  3. Choose Custom domain names.
  4. Choose the name of the domain that you would like to make the primary domain.
  5. Choose the Make primary command and confirm your choice when prompted.
  6. You have the option to alter the primary domain name for your organization to any verified custom domain that isn't federated. This change does not affect the usernames of existing users within your organization.
