Choose your upgrade journey from Skype for Business to Teams
The upgrade to Teams from Skype for Business could be a one shot shift or you could gradually introduce your employees to use certain capabilities in Teams alongside Skype for Business. Given the five modes of Teams deployment, always run a pilot of chosen mode of deployment to ensure that your organization is ready to upgrade to Teams. There are two methods for migrating an existing organization with Skype for Business to Teams:
- Overlapping capabilities: In this method, the Islands mode of coexistence is adopted. Users use Teams alongside the existing Skype for Business, during a transitional phase. In this mode, most of the Teams capabilities are made available to them. Once the organization is ready, the administrator moves the users to Teams Only mode.
- Select capabilities: In this method, any one of the Skype for Business modes is used, be it Skype only mode or Skype for Business with Teams collaboration mode or Skype with Teams collaboration & meetings mode. The administrator determines the functionalities such as chat, voice calls, and meetings, to be made available in each application. There is no overlap of functionalities between the applications. Administrators use the TeamsUpgradePolicy to control when to shift these functionalities to Teams and progressively migrate more users to Teams Only mode.
