Automate Custom Firmware Update Policy for Android Devices
The Custom Firmware Update Policy helps administrators manage and schedule firmware updates for Android devices. This feature is especially useful for scenarios like deploying important security updates to devices in high-security environments or updating older devices that no longer receive support through regular update channels.
The key capabilities include:
- Automated Updates: Automatically update firmware on devices running Android 10 or newer.
- Flexible Scheduling: Choose specific days, weeks, or times to ensure updates don’t disrupt work.
- Download Control: Decide when and how updates are downloaded, with an option to limit downloads to Wi-Fi.
- User Notifications: Keep users informed with personalized notifications about pending updates.
- Monitoring Updates: Check the status of updates in real-time to see which devices have been updated.
Note: For devices running Android versions below 10, firmware updates must be carried out using the respective OEM app. Since each OEM has its own process, follow the update steps specified by the device manufacturer.
Steps to Configure the Custom Firmware Update Policy
- Enter a unique Policy Name.
- Upload the firmware file in .zip format (max size: 2GB). If the file size exceeds 2GB, contact support to get assistance.
- Specify the file storage path (e.g.,
storage/emulated/0/{directory_name}
). For devices running Android 10 and above, a default path will be chosen by MDM. For devices below Android 10, manual path selection is required. - Select download timing: Deployment Window or Anytime.
- Enable Wi-Fi-only downloads (optional).
- Choose the Preferred Week(s) and Day(s) for deployment.
- Set the Deployment Window (start and end times in 24-hour format).
- Enable User Notifications (optional).
- Customize the notification Title and Message Content.

Best Practices for Custom Firmware Deployment
Follow these guidelines to ensure a seamless and efficient custom firmware deployment:
- Verify the firmware file format before uploading to avoid deployment errors.
- Schedule updates during off-peak hours to minimize disruptions for users.
- Restrict downloads to Wi-Fi for stable and reliable firmware delivery.
- Notify users in advance with clear and detailed update information.
- Ensure devices have a stable internet connection and a battery level above 50% to prevent update failures.
- Confirm the firmware file is compatible with the device's OS version and model to avoid compatibility issues.
- Check that devices have enough free storage space to accommodate the firmware file.
