    SNMP Configuration

Using this feature, you can configure and map Object IDs (OIDs) to SNMP device attributes, which have so far been reserved to the database.

SNMP device scan often fetches incorrect data due to the following reasons:

    • Inaccurate OID mapping in the application database (usually results in incorrect device model names and serial numbers).
    • Unmapped OIDs.

In such cases, you can now manually correct attribute values, reassociate OIDs with the right attributes, and also configure OIDs for new attributes.

    SNMP Device Scan

When you scan an SNMP device, its sysOID is initially fetched. The sysOID uniquely identifies the device's model name, product type, and manufacturer. Once the device is identified, the inventory is initiated to fetch values of the device attributes, including asset additional fields, CI attributes, and default fields.

    Configuring SysOIDS

SNMP devices that are identified during the scan using the sysOIDs in the application will be added under Admin >> Discovery >> SNMP Configurations >> Device Identification. Under this tab, you can manually add sysOIDs and edit available ones.

    Adding a new SysOID

Under the Device Identification tab, click New.

Enter the model name, select a product type and a manufacturer, type a sysOID, and click Save. (You can create a new product type and a manufacturer using the Plus icon).

    Editing a SysOID

Under Device Identification, click a model to edit its related information. You can edit all details, including sysOID, model, product type, and manufacturer. (You can create a new product type and a manufacturer using the Plus icon).

    Configuring Product for Unknown SysOIDs

Devices discovered during the scan will not be identified if their sysOIDs are not available in the application. New sysOIDs will be added under Admin >> Discovery >> SNMP Configurations >> Configure product for Unknown sysOIDs

Here, you can manually associate related information, such as model, product type, and manufacturer with the sysOIDs. Once configured, the sysOID will be moved to the Device Identification tab.

    Configuring OIDs

When an SNMP device is identified using its sysOID, the inventory will be initiated to fetch values of the device attributes. The attribute values will be fetched using OID queries since each attribute has a unique OID mapped in the application database. However, the OIDs are often not available for attributes, or are mapped to incorrect attributes. In such cases, you can modify the OID configurations in the UI and avoid fetching incorrect data.

    Configuring OIDs for Attributes

Go to Admin >> Discovery >> SNMP Configurations >> Device Inventory and follow the below steps:

Step 1: Choose the Product Type

Choose the product type whose attributes need OID configuration. You can optionally choose a specific manufacturer for the selected product type. All attributes of the selected product type will be listed. Based on the filter(s) chosen, OIDs will be configured for a specific product type from a specific manufacturer, say HP Printers, or only for a product type, for example Printers. (Note that OIDs cannot be configured for All Network Devices manually.)

From the list of attributes, select the field (or attribute) that needs OID configuration. Alternately, you can click Configure OID and choose the attribute.

Step 2: Fetch OID from MIB

The OID must be fetched from the corresponding device's MIB file, obtained from the manufacturer and uploaded into the application. Click From MIB on the displayed pop-up window.

Under the From MIB section, choose the corresponding device's MIB file. You can also directly upload the MIB file here.

Under the MIB tree, choose the MIB node corresponding to the attribute. You can expand and view all MIB nodes, or use the Search button. As you select the MIB node, the corresponding OID will be displayed on the respective field.

Step 3: Test the OID chosen

Optionally, you can sample query a device and check whether the OID fetched from the MIB file returns the right value for the attribute.

To sample query a device, click Test Device displayed under the From MIB section. Enter the device's hostname or IP address, choose the device's credentials, and click Get

The attribute value returned will be displayed. When you query attribute values from a folder, you can search the exact attribute from the list of returned values.

Use the Clear button to wipe out the listed attributes.

Step 4: Specify the Unit (only for 'Size' attributes)

When you configure OID for any 'size' attributes, you must identify and specify the unit in which the value will be returned. Values returned for size attribute values will be converted and displayed across the application in just two units—Bytes, KB, and MB will be converted to GB and GB will be converted to TB.

    Step 5: Save the OID

After completing the OID configuration, testing, and unit specification, click Save Attribute. You can edit the OID and associated details at any time.

    MIB Browser

The MIB browser allows you to navigate within the MIB of the selected network device and retrieve the value of any MIB variables. The SNMP MIB Browser enables you to issue SNMP MIB queries on a specified network device and display the result of these queries. This data can help you resolve issues on the specified network device.

A stripped version of the MIB browser is available during the OID configuration. To exercise all available functionalities of the MIB browser, click MIB browser

On the displayed pop-up window, choose the MIB file of a specific network device. You can also upload the MIB from here. Browse through the MIB tree and select a specific MIB node or a folder for which you want to view the OIDs for. When you select the MIB node or the folder the OID and its description will be parallelly displayed on the adjacent section.

You can sample query a device to check whether the selected OID fetches the right attribute value. You can provide the hostname/IP address and the community string to query the device. Alternately, you can set up credentials under Set Credentials. In the Set Credentials settings box, you can choose the already saved credentials under Credentials List. If the testing device uses SNMP v3 protocol, choose SNMP v3 in the Settings box and make sure that the corresponding parameters are set. If your device uses SNMP v1/v2 protocol, you must set up the corresponding parameters.

After setting up credentials, click Get. The attribute value(s) returned for the OID queried in the host device will be displayed. Instead of selecting a MIB node, you can select a MIB folder and click Get. All attributes along with their values will be listed, from which you can search for a specific OID or attribute. The corresponding value in the list will be highlighted.

The Table option is available only for attributes with multiple values (indicated by <> icon in the MIB tree.) Click the MIB node and click Table.
