How to leverage regex to enforce strong password policies

User passwords in your organization can be mandated to meet custom regex patterns in ADSelfService Plus, allowing you to define precise password requirements tailored to your organization’s unique password policies. This ensures compliance with industry regulations like the GDPR, HIPAA, or the PCI DSS while also addressing your organization's security standards to safeguard critical resources effectively.

Note: In addition to regex patterns, ADSelfService Plus' Password Policy Enforcer feature offers several other granular features to ensure that your users choose strong passwords that meet your organization's password policy and achieve compliance with regulatory norms.

To mandate user passwords match a regex pattern, follow the steps below.

  1. Log in to ADSelfService Plus with admin credentials.
  2. Navigate to the Configuration tab. Under the Self-Service section, select Password Policy Enforcer.
  3. Enable Enforce Custom Password Policy and navigate to Restrict Pattern.

    Enforce Custom Password Policy

  4. Select Password should meet the given regex pattern. A text box underneath the option will appear.
  5. In the text box, provide a regex pattern that meets your organization's password policy. Click here to learn more about how to structure regex patterns.
  6. To help users understand the enforced regex format during password creation and verify whether their passwords meet the requirements in real time, you can show them a message while they are setting a new password. To do so, click the Customize View link next to the Show this policy requirement in reset and change password pages option.
  7. The Customize Message on pop-up will appear. From the drop-down, select the endpoint ( Web Portal, Machine Login Screen, Mobile Browser, or App ) on which the message should be displayed. You can set a different message for each endpoint, if required.

    Customize Message on

  8. Edit the message you want to show your users in the Display Text column beside the Password should meet the given regex pattern rule. This text will be visible to users when they are setting their new password.

Example: If your regex pattern mandates that user passwords have at least three asterisk characters, you can enter Passwords should have at least three asterisk characters as the display text.

  9. Click Save to save the display text and close the Customize Message pop-up.
  10. Click Save on the Password Policy Enforcer page.

That's it! Your users will now be mandated to structure their passwords to match the regex pattern set by you.
