Meet our cohorts

We surveyed 3,300 professionals working worldwide in IT and in other business functions. In the Philippines, 150 decision-makers across IT and other key business functions were surveyed from a range of private sector organizations. We've divided them into two broad categories: IT decision-makers (ITDMs), and business decision-makers (BDMs).

The evolution of the IT department

Collaboration with IT teams has increased

93%

of all respondents in the Philippines said there's been an increase in collaboration between their organization's IT teams and other departments in the last two years.

This is the highest response among all ASEAN countries surveyed (Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Philippines).

Meanwhile, IT structures are being decentralised

58%

of the ITDMs in the Philippines said that their organization has successfully decentralized its IT infrastructure.

42%

of them responded that their organization is currently attempting to decentralize its IT infrastructure.

Decentralization of IT is not without challenges

ITDMs in the Philippines said that the decentralization of their organization's IT structures is posing challenges in areas such as security and user experience.

But there are benefits too

72%

of decision-makers in the Philippines list professional growth through upskilling as one of the benefits of decentralization. This is the highest not just for ASEAN but across the globe.

Here's the complete list of benefits that decision-makers believe will result from the decentralization of their organization's IT structures:

Technology is becoming more pervasive,
but employees may not be ready

IT teams are making more use of data analytics

On the IT side of things, many ITDMs said that their organization uses advanced data analytics in its IT operations. The top two applications of analytics here were anomaly detection and forecasting.

In what ways has your organization used advanced data analytics in its IT operations over the last year?

Business departments are also using AI and ML technologies

While IT is still ahead of the other departments in the use of AI and ML technologies, these technologies are also seeing use in customer service, finance, and other departments.

Which departments, if any, within your organization currently use AI and ML technology?

The use of these technologies is not yet ubiquitous in the region (or globally for that matter). However, in the Philippines, the non-IT departments highlighted above are more likely to be using these technologies than their global counterparts.

But employees face barriers when it comes to using technology

60%

of BDMs in the Philippines said that a lack of training is a barrier their organization's employees face in trying to take full advantage of the technologies being used.

This is the highest when compared to both the global average of 47% and the data from ASEAN peers like Singapore (48%), Malaysia (45%), and Indonesia (47%).

Internal training is the primary mode of employee education

78%

of BDMs in the Philippines said that their department receives training in technology processes and tools from an internal training team. Only 18% said they rely on online courses.

Both of these numbers stand out globally as well as in ASEAN. The Philippines has the highest number of BDMs relying on internal teams for training and the lowest number relying on online courses than any other country surveyed.

About IT leaders and job satisfaction

Many IT leaders feel adequately supported

59%

of ITDMs in the Philippines feel their organization should have supported them more in the last two years. This is the second lowest response across all regions surveyed.

So, they're not looking to change jobs

33%

of ITDMs in the Philippines said they're actively looking for a new job. This is the third lowest response; only Brazil (20%) and Saudi Arabia (32%) had fewer ITDMs looking to change jobs.

Nonetheless, don't take away their benefits

Though they're more likely to be loyal to their organizations than their peers in other regions, ITDMs in the Philippines give a lot of importance to some key benefits they currently enjoy. As per them, removing these benefits—like flexible work—could make them resign.

Which of the following would drive you to resign from your current organization if it was no longer offered?

Wrapping it up

In the Philippines, IT teams have seen a major change in the way they work. Collaboration between non-IT departments and the IT teams has increased. Part of this could be driven by the decentralization of IT infrastructure. While this poses challenges in key areas like security, decision-makers believe that decentralization will help employees upskill, and also bring other benefits to the organization.

Meanwhile, the use of technologies like advanced analytics, AI, and ML is on the rise. Non-IT departments like finance and customer service are also making use of these new tools. However, a lack of training prevents employees from taking full advantage of the technologies in use.
