You can migrate email, calendar and contact information from on-premises Exchange server to Exchange Online in many ways such as minimal hybrid method, cutover method, staged method, and so on. In this fifth part of a six-part series about migration from on-premises Exchange server to Exchange Online, we will discuss the cutover method.
This method is recommended for migrating less number of mailboxes (from Exchange Server versions 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013 and 2016) in a shorter span of time.Though this method allows migration of upto 2000 mailboxes, it is optimal to migrate lesser than 150 mailboxes using this method.
For cutover migration, you will have to perform tasks at three levels as a migration admin.
- On-premises Exchange server tasks:
- Create migration end-points connecting on-premises servers to Microsoft 365.
- Prepare the servers to be decommissioned.
- Microsoft 365 tasks:
- Create mail-enabled security groups for migration.
- Verify domain connectivity and check routing.
- Assign Microsoft 365 license to the users.
- Once the routing has been verified, delete the cutover migration batches.
- Domain registry related tasks:
- Verify the domain and DNS records.
- Begin routing email to Microsoft 365 accounts post migration.
M365 Manager Plus helps you to keep track of all types of migration with pre-defined and intuitive reports.
