Network Scanner Tool



OpUtils' network Scanner utility along with its network port scanner tool will help you scan switch ports and network devices associated with an entire range of IP addresses to:

  • Identify the availability of the devices through ICMP or SNMP

  • Check the forward and reverse lookup actions

  • Identify the MAC Addresses of the devices

To scan your network

  1. Choose Toolset --> Network Monitoring -> Network Scanner
  2. The input to the Network Scanner tool can be any or combination of the following. Click Add IP and choose:

    1. IP Range: Enter the Starting IP and Ending IP in the text field provided and click Add. The specified range gets added to the table below.

    2. IP List: Enter the IP Addresses as comma separated values and click Add. You can also specify a range like 192.168.113.1-10,192.168.21-20. The specified IP Addresses gets added to the table below.

  3. Choose the options to Scan:

    1. Ping Scan - helps you to identify the device availability through ICMP

    2. SNMP Scan - helps to identify the device availability using SNMP. The community string specified in the settings will be used.

    3. MAC Address Scan - helps to identify the MAC addresses of the devices

    4. DNS Scan - helps you to check the forward and reverse lookup actions

  4. Click Scan

  5. Check the results - depending on the options chosen for scan, you will find the scan results updated in the table below and a summary of each scan as a graph at the top of the table.

  6. To clear the result of specific set of IPs, select the rows and click Clear Results. To clear all the results, click Clear All Results.

  7. To delete a row or set of rows from the table, select the rows and click Delete.

Interpreting Results

Different icons are used in the result to notify the status of the system for a particular scan option that was chosen:

Ping Scan:

 System up and running   

Represents that the system is Up and is responding to the ICMP Ping

System not alive

   Represents that the system is Down and us not responding to ICMP Ping   

System does not exist

Represents that the system does not exist

SNMP Scan:

SNMP Node

Represents that the system is Up and is responding to the SNMP

Non-SNMP Node

Represents that the system is Up and is not responding to SNMP

System not alive

   Represents that the system is Down and us not responding to SNMP Ping    

    System does not exist    

Represents that the system does not exist

DNS Scan:

Forward Lookup Failed

Represents the systems for which the DNS to IP resolution fails

Reverse Lookup Failed

Represents the systems for which the IP to DNS resolution fails

   Forward Lookup IP Mismatch   

  Represents the systems for which the DNS to IP lookup returns a different IP    

Success

Represents the systems whose DNS resolution is successful

Response Time:

Response time is represented in milli seconds, which is the sum response times of all the scan types, excluding SNMP Scan, that have been chosen to scan. For example, if you have chosen Ping, MAC Address and DNS Scan options and if a system takes 5ms to respond to each of these scans, then the Response time indicated in the results would be 15ms.
