Netherlands-based real estate data company avoids system downtime using OpManager and Firewall Analyzer

About Vabi

Vabi is a Netherlands-based company that provides "real estate data in order, for everyone." Since 1972, the company has focused on making software that calculates the performance of buildings. Vabi, one of the first software companies in the world, has widened its scope from making calculations for construction and installation technology to making building data accessible to everyone. Nine out of 10 utility buildings in the country have been simulated with Vabi's sustainable model.

Challenges Faced

Vabi focuses on making real estate data more reliable and readily available to the market, meaning it has a considerably large amount of data hosted on its servers. Prior to adopting OpManager, Vabi did not have any proper monitoring solution for its network devices. Veeam One was being used to monitor the virtual elements in the network, but all other devices were left unmanaged. This left Vabi with poor visibility over the network and a need for a central solution that could keep track of CPU memory, disk usage, and device availability.

According to Peter Leone, system administrator for Vabi, "It took too much time to troubleshoot issues."

That's when OpManager came to the rescue.

Overcoming the Challenge with OpManager

Vabi tried OpManager, an agentless and user-friendly tool that could monitor Vabi's servers, networks, virtual devices, databases, and URLs, all from OpManager's UI.

Eliminating System Downtime with OpManager

OpManager gave Vabi complete visibility over its network infrastructure, so network admins could better understand the needs and issues existing in their network. OpManager easily handles Vabi's business-critical metrics that have to be monitored on a daily basis such as CPU and memory utilization in servers and availability of network devices. OpManager keeps network admins updated about the availability status of their devices, so they can take steps to rectify any issues and steer clear of costly downtimes.

Monitoring Made Easy

In addition to monitoring the availability and bandwidth utilization of network devices, Vabi's software team set up service monitors, event log monitors, syslog monitors, and VMWare/HyperV/Xen monitors with OpManager. This provided them with more insights on the performance of their network devices and kept them informed with real-time alerts whenever any of the set thresholds were violated. Threshold-based alerting has proved to be a huge advantage, as network admins can decide on the severity of an issue and the required response as and when the alert is raised.

Insightful Dashboards

Another aspect that Vabi's network management team finds immensely useful is the user-specific dashboards. With this feature, admins using OpManager can create individual dashboards specific to their account, so they can get an instant overview of their managed devices. This greatly reduces downtime by helping admins instantly discover which devices are experiencing issues so they can take immediate action, which, in turn, helps cut down the mean-time-to-repair (MTTR) of the network devices.

The Firewall Analyzer Advantage

Vabi implemented the Firewall Analyzer add-on to gain easy insights on firewall activity and proactively monitor their WAN connection. With the add-on, the organization was able to effectively track and monitor activity in its firewall. In Leone's words, "Because of Firewall Analyzer, we have greater insight into the performance of our WAN connection and how our firewall is performing."
