Network visualization is an important aspect of network operations. Visualizing the network architecture helps businesses identify network performance bottlenecks by using charts, graphs, and maps to represent the network in the form of topology maps, dependency charts, layer 2 maps, data center visualizations, etc. This makes the process of network management more efficient.
Generic network visualization tools can portray discrete and isolated sections of a network in the form of a map. With organization maps, OpManager can now chart the entire architecture of a network, representing devices according to the implemented topology. An organization map provides a detailed visualization of business-critical applications, devices, and their dependencies, offering network administrators a broader visualization field. This vivid representation also makes it easier for admins to isolate and identify problematic sections or devices in the network.
Mapping the entire relationship of devices and applications across the entire network requires a lot of details and dependencies. OpManager retrieves this data from different monitoring modules and unifies the dependencies to create the bigger picture. The modules used to do this are:
Note: The SPM module is an add-on to OpManager. To include SPM data on an organization map, the add-on should be enabled, and the switches must be monitored through the add-on as well
Note: The data from the ADDM module will only be retrieved if the Applications Manager plug-in is version 172600 or above.
The map can either be rendered using the data from all the modules together or using individual modules. To view the organization map based on individual modules, use the filter function on the top-right as shown below.
Individual chunks of data from the above modules are correlated and consolidated to create the organization map, providing a complete view of the network, including seed routers, switches, firewalls, servers, and VMs, down to the application layer. This view enables admins to identify problematic devices and pinpoint the underlying cause by checking the overall dependencies.
On the organization map, devices are color-coded, with colors configured for the corresponding severities under Severity Settings.
Clicking any device on the organization map will show the summary of device information, including:
Any recent or active alarms triggered for the devices, if any, will also be displayed on the panel for quick reference. Clicking the device name tag on the top of the panel will redirect the user to the corresponding device snapshot page.
OpManager's Enterprise edition features a centralized organization map, i.e., a unified map showing the devices across all geographically discrete locations. Each individual probe has a unique network architecture, and the layer 2 maps of all individual probes are consolidated together and rendered at the central server to give admins complete visualization of the entire network.
1. How frequently is the organization map updated?
The map is first updated one hour after OpManager's initial installation. Subsequent refreshes occur once every six hours automatically.
2. Can I refresh the Organization Map manually?
Yes, the organization map can be refreshed manually. Click the Re-Build Map option in the top-right corner of the map and wait while OpManager rebuilds the map.
