SNMP v3 support for Cisco IP SLA configuration in OpManager

Cisco IP SLA monitoring in OpManager involves IP SLA monitor configuration and data collection using SNMP. For data collection, all SNMP versions were already supported in OpManager, but with an exception for adding or deleting a SLA monitor. In this case, only SNMP v1 and v2c were supported.

From version 125652, OpManager allows addition and deletion of IP SLA monitor using SNMP v3. Mentioned below are the pre-requisites and the steps to add a new IP SLA monitor with SNMP v3 credential.

Pre-Requisites:

At the source device:

  1. A SNMP v3 group must be configured with read and write privilege with MIB View that supports Cisco-RTT-MON MIB. By default v1default view is used. Any similar view can be configured and associated to the SNMP v3 group.
  2. A new SNMP v3 user must be configured and associated to the created SNMP v3 group with read and write privilege.

In OpManager:

An SNMP v3 credential should be configured and associated to the device.

How to configure a SNMP v3 group/user at the source device:

  1. Given below is a sample command to create a SNMP v3 group. Please ensure that read and write permissions are enabled for the configured group.
  2. Format: snmp-server group v3 priv read v1default write v1default
Example: snmp-server group ipslatest v3 priv read v1default write v1default

  3. Given below is a sample command to create a SNMP v3 user at the source device. Please ensure that read and write permissions are enabled for the configured user.
  4. Format: snmp-server user v3 auth priv
    Example: snmp-server user ipslauser1 ipslatest v3 auth md5 ipslauser1Priv priv des ipslauser1Priv

Note: Once the monitor is added, OpManager will only require 'read' view permission for monitoring and data collection. You can either modify or remove the write access if necessary.

Once the above said pre-requisites are satisfied, OpManager will accept devices with SNMP v3 protocol configured and you will be able to add Cisco IP SLA monitor in OpManager using SNMP v3 protocol.
